Poor performance and negative feedbacks from the first users of the much awaited Aakash tablet has put a question mark on the device’s future.
The HRD ministry may refuse to extend the Letter of Credit to DataWind, the manufacturers of the device after a series of faults were detected in the first lot. Worse is the fact that the project might be shelved as a whole by the ministry.
The Ministry had initially placed order for 1 lac tablets of which 30,000 were delivered for the pilot project. But it proved disaster after poor feedbacks concerning the device.
The tablets distributed among the students had Android 2.1, a 336 MHz processor, two USB ports, 180 minutes of batter, a multimedia player with WiFi as the only option to access the internet (which is the the most problematic part).
It is a clear indication that the government is not in a mood to extend the LC which would lapse at the end of this month. However the company officials said that their LC would be extended beyond 30th of this month and said that they have still not been paid for the 30,000 tablets they have supplied so far.
